Police departments in Hampton roads are once again warning drivers not drink and get behind the wheel. Officers are setting up checkpoints throughout the area all weekend to catch those who do. The dangers of drinking and driving are very real. A drunk driver changed the life of Virginia Beach police officer.

Hampton Roads Transit board members call on Townes to resign (Daily Press)

Michael Townes, president and chief executive of Hampton Roads Transit and former head of Pentran, the Peninsula transit agency, is under fire for his handling of a Norfolk light-rail project, with several Southside elected officials threatening to fire him if he doesn’t resign by the end of January.

Region’s homicides climb in 2009 (The Virginian-Pilot)

The number of homicides went up in 2009 in most Hampton Roads cities, even as the national rate declined. Norfolk and Newport News had the biggest numerical jumps. Norfolk went from 29 homicides in 2008 to 43 in 2009. Newport News went from 16 in 2008 to 24 in 2009. Experts and police, however, say homicide numbers can fluctuate from year to year for no specific reason.
